Postcard – The Helmet of Coțofenești, Bucharest
This postcard beautifully captures the intricate elegance of the Helmet of Coțofenești, photographed in 2024 by Anda Constantinescu during its exhibition at the National History Museum of Romania in Bucharest. Crafted around the 5th century BC from gleaming electrum (a gold–silver alloy), this ceremonial Geto-Dacian helmet is adorned with symbolic “eyes” believed to ward off evil, as well as mythical scenes and a dramatic ritual sacrifice motif.
Once a captivating centerpiece of the exhibition titled “Dacia – Kingdom of Gold and Silver”, it drew admiration from visitors nationwide.
Tragically, in January 2025, during the final weekend of the exhibition at the Drents Museum in Assen, Netherlands, the helmet was stolen in a brazen overnight raid. Thieves used explosives to blast through the museum wall and absconded with the helmet along with three Dacian gold bracelets. Investigations continue, with Dutch authorities arresting three suspects—but the artifacts remain missing.
This postcard serves as a poignant tribute—a reminder of a priceless piece of Romania’s ancient heritage that shone in a Bucharest gallery and now awaits its return.
