It is one state with limited recognition.
South Ossetia is a region in the Caucasus, located in the southern part of North Ossetia-Alania, Russia and also considered as an autonomous region within the country of Georgia. It is bordered by Russia to the north, Georgia to the south and east, and the de facto independent state of Abkhazia to the west.
The flag of South Ossetia features three horizontal stripes of white on the top, red in the middle, and yellow on the bottom. The white color represents peace, the red stripe symbolizes the blood shed by the Ossetian people in their struggle for independence, and the yellow color represents the wealth of the land. The flag was adopted in 1992, after South Ossetia declared independence from Georgia, but this independence is not recognized by most of the countries.
