The flag of São Tomé and Príncipe features three horizontal stripes of green, yellow, and green. The yellow stripe is slightly wider than the two green stripes. and in the center of the yellow stripe, there are two black, five-pointed stars that are aligned vertically. The two stars represent the two islands that make up São Tomé and Príncipe.The green stripes represent the country's agricultural wealth, while the yellow stripe symbolizes the country's bright future and the equator, which runs through the nation. The flag was adopted on Independence Day, July 12, 1975, when São Tomé and Príncipe gained independence from Portugal.
